TIMES --------------------- 5:30-6:30PM
CONDITIONS ------------- overcast, a little breeze from the East
AREA FISHED ------------- Pickerel Point, Bertrand Island
FISHING METHOD ------- casting, slow retrieve
BAIT/LURES USED ------- Road Runner with plastic trailer
NOTES --------------------- Using ultralight gear with four pound test looking for crappie, after a few perch I had a large hit and the drag took off. Thinking it was a pickerel, I was very surprised to see a walleye surface, a 4lb. 5oz. Shortly after that over by Bertrand Island, my partner, Fred Nitek with six pound test hooked and landed an 8lb. 11oz. muskie that did some incredible acrobatics.

TIMES --------------------- Striper Contest
CONDITIONS ------------- Warm day, cool night
AREA FISHED ------------- Main lake points
FISHING METHOD ------- Trolling and live bait
BAIT/LURES USED ------- Rapala's and herring
NOTES --------------------- I started the contest out trolling and didn't get a thing, a couple other guys got small hybrids trolling so I must have been doing something wrong. At sunset I started anchoring with live bait rigs off points and caught walleyes from 17 to 21 inches long and some bullhead. It wasn't until about 4:30 in the morning that I got the first hybrid, then 2 more in the next hour. The largest at 6lb.12oz. was big enough for third place in the contest.

TIMES --------------------- 6am to noon
CONDITIONS ------------- Cloudy turning sunny
AREA FISHED ------------- Main Lake by Bertrand's Island
FISHING METHOD ------- Live bait and trolling
BAIT/LURES USED ------- Herring and Rapala's
NOTES --------------------- We started out with live bait while casting lures and were getting a lot of yellow perch, with an occasional gamefish. Later we trolled with the downriggers and got a couple more fish. Best catch of the day was 21 in. walleye(live-bait) followed by a 3lb. largemouth(casting fire-tiger Rapala). Total for the day was 3 largemouth, 3 pickerel, a brown catfish, 5 yellow perch, a crappie, a sunny(trolling), and the walleye. Who says the fishing in Lake Hopatcong is slow!

TIMES --------------------- 6-11am
CONDITIONS ------------- Overcast into partly cloudy
AREA FISHED ------------- Bertrand's Island
FISHING METHOD ------- Live bait
BAIT/LURES USED ------- Herring
NOTES --------------------- I drifted along the weed edges of the main lake using my electric trolling motor to stay in the transition zone. Picked up a 20" walleye, a couple pickerel and largemouth bass, lots of perch, and a bullhead. A total of 14 fish - not a bad day.
