FISHING METHOD ------- Drifting Herring Lindy style
BAIT/LURES USED ------- Live Herring
NOTES --------------------- Cris and I got a late start on the Stew Lant challenge. Picked up bait at DOWs and off to Byram/Henderson Bays. Drifted for about 30mins at 18 ft. looking for the illusive trout and I mean any trout would be great. Surface water is warm, but at 18 feet it should be about 60. I was heading back to make a short drift when I spotted the surface splashing. Stripers!! I told Chris to drop a line and I did the same. Bang! Chris has a striper on. Bang ! so do I. Both our drags where singing, when Chris says to me, get the net. OK this is going to be a challenge. With one finger on my old top drag I grabbed the net with my other hand and netted the first stripper. Mine didn't want any part of coming close to the boat. Finally, it tired and Chris netted mine. Chris weighed in at 6 lbs and mine was 7 lbs. That's the only weigh in fish we caught for the next 16 hours of fishing. But, guess what? Those strippers can make your day.

FISHING METHOD ------- Thermal study
BAIT/LURES USED ------- AquaCal deep water temperature guage
NOTES --------------------- Did an extensive thermal profile of several areas of the lake today. Was concerned about recent heat wave as pertains to trout. Thought you folks might be interested in this info prior to Stew Lant Contest next week. Dissolved oxygen is not a concern now w/ DO all the way down to 45 feet+. Didn't have a DO meter but determined that by swimming herring that deep w/ no problem. Some interesting things I thought you'd all like to know. Started at point where Byram meets Henderson Bay. 76 at surface to 8'. 12' was 66. 18'--60. So fish there for trout. Next went to Nolan's PT. Cool water (65) was deeper @16', 59 @ 20. Center of main lake between Elba & Chestnut points about the same but tad deeper. 74 @ 16, 69 @ 18 & 61 @ 20 & 59 @ 22. Next stop between Sharps Rock and Yacht Club. Cool waters set up deeper still. 75 @ 16, 71 @ 18, 69 @19, 63 @ 20 & 60 @ 22. Thought the deeper mainlake would have been colder so returned to Byram and checked between Sunrise & Pine Tree Points. Same as earlier sample temperature chenge occured 11-12' w/ 60 @ 18'. So fish 12-18 North & West of Raccoon and 18-22 south and east of there. Lets get some trout on the board for the contest. Lot of other interesting stuff but I thought this was what you'd like to know. Checked temps at two foot intervals top to bottom and hung guage off of my down rigger while anchored so temps & depths are exact. Deepest water, regardless of where samples were taken (30'-50'+) were all between 51-54. Lots of interesting info and will probably turn it into some kind of report but wanted you folks to know this ASAP. Mid week surface was 80 in mainlake and dropped to 73 this AM because of rain & cool nights but shot back up to 76 +/- by end of day and that 76 went down to desirable trout temps 10'-16' according to where I checked. Like to thank Don "The Proffessor" Eckelhoffer for lending a hand. Webguy's Note: That's some very interesting information there, Thanks Tim!

Went by Davis cove with some herring and anchored up. Picked up a rock bass and then an eel about 2 feet long or so. Never caught one of those before. Nice fight but ugly! Sorrya baout the quality of the pic, had to use my cell phone because we forgot the camera. Then we got one catfish by byram cove. All in all a nice trip.

NOTES --------------------- Caught a couple of Largemouths around the docks. The biggest one about 2lbs. Only one Walleye at the weedline in Byrom on a herring, 3lbs. About 20 perch. The Walleye spit up 7 herring! I guess there is plenty of bait in water. Maybe that's why the fish are so hard to catch lately. Anybody else fishing?

NOTES --------------------- Caught quite a few Hybrid Stripers, but all small. I've caught fish as small as 4" this year, but not that small today. The biggest were about a pound. Is it really impossible for these fish to breed? Also caught a decent rainbow on Sunken Island, one nice pickerel, some white and yellow perch, and a couple of nice size bluegills. Not a great day, but lots of action and a beautiful morning. Anybody out there who is fishing? Please let us know how your doing. Thanks
