NOTES --------------------- Fished first time and got nothing but wet. Rained hard on me. Came in for break when I saw lightning. Returned to fishing and did the same things. Caught 7 trout and missed a few more. Fish hitting odd. Three fish with hooks on outside of mouth. Three times rigger went off and had no fish. I would turn and watch fish hit the other short line. This happened 3or4 times on sunday also. Water was warmer early and cooler after the rain.

WATER TEMPERATURE-- 58.2 to 58.8
FISHING METHOD ------- trolling
BAIT/LURES USED ------- rapalas, thunderstick jrs., phoebes
NOTES --------------------- Had boat problems my battery was shorted out by my landing net. Trolled to Dows to get new battery. Caught 4 and lost 2 on way over. Had two places marked on gps that produced 14 strikes. caught 15 browns and saw 1rainbow junp off. Fish were from 12 to 16inchs. All caught in middle of main lake. Caught flat linning and on the rigger at 5ft. Fish are taking bigger lures like thunderstick jr. and #9 rapalas. Gold phoebes are still working. The speed is still the same 3.1 to 3.2mph. AAAm conditions like trout tournament in 2000 but only lasted 2hours. When you catch a fish in a spot trolling you must keep going to that spot all day. Some of the places today gave up a fish everytime. Other places every third or fourth time.

FISHING METHOD ------- flatlining and downrigging
BAIT/LURES USED ------- phoebes, thundersticks and raplas
NOTES --------------------- What a great day to fish the lake, especially for a holiday weekend. We ended up with largemouth, pickerel and perch which wasn't what we were looking for but still better than getting skunked. There was hardly any boat traffic and the only other fisherman we saw was Limo. It was a perfect rainy gray day to troll anywhere you wanted to. It'd be okay with me if it rained (or snowed)every holiday weekend. Special thanks to S.Kirsch Charters.

NO HITS! Lost 1 50 cent herring to a possible nibbler. Peg Leg finally nailed a beauty! A healthy 25 inch 6 lb. 'EYE over the island at 5:30 PM. That was it. Took pictures. Kissed him goodbye. Should've weighed him in at Dow's. C'est la vie!

CONDITIONS ------------- Clear skies and dead calm in the morning changing to overcast and brisk winds in the afternoon.
AREA FISHED ------------- Bedbug Island to Raccoon Island
WATER TEMPERATURE-- Room temperature
FISHING METHOD ------- Trolling and casting and still fishing.
BAIT/LURES USED ------- Rapalas, jigs, spinnerbaits and spoonplugs.
NOTES --------------------- Scattered perch, pickerel and one 5 lb. walleye. All the fish were caught on the shallow flats. No concentrations of fish, no apparent activity period and no fish were found deeper. We were treated to the sight of two Common Loons swimming between Halsey and Raccoon Islands on the edge of the deep water. And then, a real bonus, where the two ospreys normally fish around Halsey Island, we instead saw a crow harassing a very large bird flapping desperately to escape the annoying bombardment. Rudy's finely-tuned fisheries biologist's eyes picked up the unmistakable flat wing profile, laborious wing beats and white flash of head and tail of a mature Bald Eagle. We put the binoculars on the majestic bird, cranked up the engine and followed its flight path to the north side of Raccoon Island where we drifted silently and watched the beautiful bird fly higher and further to elude the pursuing crows. On Rudy's home waters of the Chesapeake Bay where he lives and works, this is a common sight. For me on Lake Hopatcong, an absolute thrill! ALL FISH RELEASED.

NOTES --------------------- Saw a lot of herring jumping and some very LARGE stripers chasing but could not get any to bite. Did help a nice guy land a LARGE MUSKY. He was anchored waiting for someone to pass by with a large enough net to land the fish. It was caught trolling a 3/4oz fluorescent yellow and green spinnerbait right outside of Floraine's Marina. Barely fit in my net that is 28" deep! First day out on the water this year so just making sure the old baby was working. Put on my fishfinder and marked only small fish in 2-6ft of water.
