NAME --------------------- Jeff Loy

DATE ---------------------- Wednesday August 22, 2001

TIMES --------------------- 12:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

CONDITIONS ------------- post frontal- clear and windy

AREA FISHED ------------- Bertrand Island to Raccoon Island

FISHING METHOD ------- trolling and casting--mostly trolling, straggler fishing

BAIT/LURES USED ------- spoonplugs and jigs

NOTES --------------------- Not having been on the lake for 5 weeks, I had one heck of a time finding the fish. After checking shallow to deep repeatedly, I finally had a heavy strike in 30 feet of water. After a lengthy battle I slipped the net under a huge (and exhausted) hybrid beach towel...my first of the season! Whoever said you can't catch'm below the thermocline? I also managed to land a wayward seat cushion and a ski vest, both shallow up over the weeds. Finally at 5:30 p.m. I hooked and landed a yellow perch which clearly had a concussion from attacking a spoonplug twice its size. On the next two passes at 22 and 26 feet at the tip of Halsey Island, I landed a 4 lb. largemouth and a 12lb. 12 oz. hybrid musky. That's where the beach towel came in handy. The musky was suspended perhaps 15 to 20 feet off the breakline. That was the third musky of 10 lbs. or more that has come from that same spot for me. ALL FISH RELEASED! ALL FLOTSAM KEPT! All in all, a better day for salvaging than for fishing.
