CONDITIONS ------------- light wind- hot and dry

AREA FISHED ------------- Elba Point

FISHING METHOD ------- from dock/ spinning tackle

NAME --------------------- Bob Gatti

DATE ---------------------- 7/27/01

TIMES --------------------- 2pm-8pm

CONDITIONS ------------- Sunny Warm

AREA FISHED ------------- Sharps rock, Bertrand

FISHING METHOD ------- Livelined Herring,

BAIT/LURES USED ------- twistertail grubs 1" and rattle traps

NOTES --------------------- Caught a ton of perch and calico bass on the grubs in front of the boat houses around Sharps. The herring did not produce anywhere and the boat traffic was unbearable. A couple of pound and a half bass on the rattletraps with Chrome being the only producing color. More importantly I picked up my new LUND boat from North Jersey Marine and she is terrific.

NAME --------------------- Larry Maz & TC

DATE ---------------------- 7/27

TIMES --------------------- 6PM - 9PM

CONDITIONS ------------- Warm - slight wind

AREA FISHED ------------- 20 - 30 ft. dropoffs

FISHING METHOD ------- slip bobber, flat line

BAIT/LURES USED ------- herring

NOTES --------------------- Fishing was a little slow with only 4 fish in 3 hours but two were nice size gamefish. First, TC caught a 3+Lb. Smallmouth in about 20ft. of water w/ a slip bobber 10ft. down on ultralight tackle. Then, I caught a 7 3/4Lb. Striper on a slip bobber in 25ft. water 15ft. down. A few people saw this fish caught and decided to fish nearby but unfortunately nothing else good was caught after that. The highlight of the trip for TC was watching me fall in the lake after a perfectly timed wave caught me while throwing the anchor in (I followed it). The highlight for me was TC's wild boar loins that we cooked up on the grill while fishing, these were great!!! I'll be out again for Stripers Monday and Tuesday nights, 30th and 31st, and will let you know if I have any luck....

NAME --------------------- Larry Mazalatis

DATE ---------------------- 7/24

TIMES --------------------- 6:15 - 6:50 PM

CONDITIONS ------------- Windy, Hot, Rough Waters

AREA FISHED -------------

FISHING METHOD ------- Slip Bobbers, Flat Line, Straight Down under Boat

BAIT/LURES USED ------- Herring

NOTES --------------------- I had a few minutes to spare before a KDC meeting and decided to fish. Bought 1 Dz. Herring at Laurie's around 6PM and headed out. Used 6 poles in holders (2 bobbers, 2 flat line, 2 straight down) and had them all out by 6:15. The next 30 minutes is a blur but will never be forgotten as I hooked up with 7 stripers (one pole was recasted after losing the first fish). I was by myself and lost 4 stripers while landing 3. Three double headers, lost two fish this way as they spooled me and swam away with 200+ yards of line each. The first fish spit the hook and lost one other when it swam under the boat and around the engine. I did manage to land 3 one of which had my spool down to the knot but could not break the 10Lb. test. All fish caught were between 6 1/2 and 7 1/2 Lbs. but I think I lost a bigger one. By 6:50 all poles were cracked out; some with no line others in a tangled mess on the floor of the boat and others w/ snapped lines so I packed it in. Thanks to TC as 3 poles were his - two now have no line as they were spooled and the other is a tangled mess!

TIMES --------------------- 4pm to 8pm

CONDITIONS ------------- sunny and warm

AREA FISHED ------------- barnes brothers ridge

FISHING METHOD ------- jigging/live bait

BAIT/LURES USED ------- kastmaster and herring

NOTES --------------------- Great day beside the boat traffic-this lake is getting virtually impossible to fish on weekends unless late night/early morning.caught several largemouth up to 3#.Also ran into a nice size muskie that fought me on my ultra-lite for about 15 minutes before getting the line caught in the prop.Pesky perch ripped through my 2 dozen herring quickly.Hooked up a kastmaster and jigged about 20 fish until dusk.Nice size perch-most of them 10 inches or better.

NAME --------------------- dan and ann mcerlean

DATE ---------------------- july 19th

TIMES --------------------- 5:30 till 8:30

CONDITIONS ------------- nice evening

AREA FISHED ------------- bertrands island and sharps rock

FISHING METHOD ------- flat line herring

BAIT/LURES USED ------- herring

NOTES --------------------- started out at bertrand island for a few smallmouths and then tried davis cove for some stripers and zero there. after a move to sharps rock almost turned out to be the death of us (a women lost control of her boat and fell out of the seat at full speed no more then 20 feet of our bow, the boat veered right at us and thank god the other person in the boat was able to back off on the throttle and the boat came to a stop about 10 feet away. the lake had traffic but full speed past an anchored boat no more then 20 feet away, she should not be driving a boat in my opinion.) but anyway my wife did not jump overboard and managed to land a 6# walleye which put her in second place for the year which made her night to say the least.

NAME --------------------- Chris Anderson

DATE ---------------------- Sunday, July 15th 2001

TIMES --------------------- 5:00 am till 12:00pm

CONDITIONS ------------- Still till 9:00 am

AREA FISHED ------------- Davis, Henderson,Sister Islands, Sunken

FISHING METHOD ------- Trolling,Live Bait

BAIT/LURES USED ------- Shiners, topwater, phoebe

NOTES --------------------- I can echo previous member, normally I fish the fifteen and lower depths this time of year. But Pike like 8ft and less so there I was with 50 other Pro Bass Contest Anglers, Weekenders and assorted Jet Ski users running over all the 8ft water (I did catch 1 smallmouth and several perch in pike habitat with prop marks and a look of disdain).I realize for these contests to be fair they have to be offered and available to all members and on days when they can compete. However to be more productive and less congested,I would be the first to consider a vacation day ahead of time. An e-mail and insert to the newsletter to get a fix on how many members would consider this would be a start( I would be happy to produce insert and make copies, let me know 973-770-9572, redwulf1@bellatlantic.net). Anyhow congrats to the winners !

NAME --------------------- Charles, Tweety and "The Mighty Flint"

DATE ---------------------- Sunday, July 15, 2001

TIMES --------------------- 5:30 AM to 3:00 PM

CONDITIONS ------------- Sunny, Cloudy, Windy

AREA FISHED ------------- Lake Hopatcong

FISHING METHOD ------- Live Bait, Artificials

BAIT/LURES USED ------- Herring, Jigs with Skirts

NOTES --------------------- It was a lousy pickerel tournament with no pickerel caught between us three. The only fish we caught were catfish, perch, and LM bass (we caught at least three of each fish). We also caught 1 crappie. Our favorite spot that catches pickerel didn't produce today. Maybe it will produce for the King of the Lake Contest. Another note: Just wanted to say that there were a hell of a lot of power boats on the water today! I can see why very few of the locals go fishing on the weekend. It's just horrendous to fish in your favorite spot and then have 10 power boats make waves and ruin the action you're producing. Since we are not locals of the lake, we don't have to deal with this problem as much as other fishermen. We only fish at the lake for the tournaments, but the main point is still clear: fish on the weekdays when the rich cats with their power rigs are working or suffer the consequences! I hope every fisherman in the tournament had a better time than we did and caught some great fish so the day wasn't a total loss!

NAME --------------------- Larry Mazalatis, John Hogan & A Few Other Gypsies

DATE ---------------------- First Week and a Half of July

TIMES --------------------- Dawn and Dusk

CONDITIONS -------------

AREA FISHED ------------- Wherever bait holds: Yacht Club, Elba P., Chestnut

FISHING METHOD ------- Herring

BAIT/LURES USED -------

NOTES --------------------- Striper fishing seems to be picking up again after being slow for most of June. Bait suspended at 15ft. or flat line on key main lake drop off points (preferably in the presence of bait) will prove the most effective way to Striper fish. John and I have caught around 10 or so in the last 4-5 trips out, not too impressive but better than June. It seemed to be one per trip or maybe two but during the last trip out we landed 3 in 45min. before being forced off the lake by a lightning storm. Two more comments: First, can we get the yearlong standings updated more often that monthly (or longer)? I know this is done by volunteers but I'd be willing to help. call 579-3363. Second, I don't know a single member that thinks stocking trout (musky bait), most of which die, is preferable to stocking real fish eg. Stripers, Walleye, Channels, Musky and what about Smallmouth? Maybe we need to put more resources into stocking real fish and less into trout?!!!

NAME --------------------- Jeff Loy at the Center for Animal Behavioral Research

DATE ---------------------- Tuesday July 10, 2001

TIMES --------------------- 4:00 P.M.- 6:45 P.M.

CONDITIONS ------------- windy with increasing cloudiness, threatening storm

AREA FISHED ------------- Chestnut Point, Nolan's Point, Halsey Island, Davis Cove, Elba Point

FISHING METHOD ------- Trolling and casting

BAIT/LURES USED ------- Rapalas, spoonplugs and jigs

NOTES --------------------- I was hoping to luck into some pre-storm activity, but lightning made a coward out of me and drove me off the water. I did manage to get two fish on consecutive trolling passes in Davis Cove. A 6 lb. walleye and a 4 lb. pickerel, near the bottom in twenty feet of water. The speed was fairly fast. ALL FISH RELEASED. Did anyone lose a pure-strain musky around the corner from Nolan's Point towards Brady Bridge? It's floating belly-up and well-aged. It was a short, but thick fish. 21 lbs. on my scale. No hook wounds, lodged lures or apparent throat or gill damage. It must have been a beautiful fish! What a shame.

NAME --------------------- "Dockside" Dan O'Donnell

DATE ---------------------- 7/4/01

TIMES --------------------- 7-9PM

CONDITIONS ------------- calm/ partly cloudy

AREA FISHED ------------- elba point

FISHING METHOD ------- from dock/ spinning tackle

BAIT/LURES USED ------- Shiners

NOTES --------------------- I had a crappie night last night. I had a strange experience and maybe some of you have seen this before: I was into a pretty thick school of crappie and they were not fighting at all. I'd hook one and it would come in like a load of weeds. I released all fish and they seemed to be alright, but I've never seen any species so lathargic when hooked. Is this a sign of an unhealthy population? or do you think that they just gave up when they discovered who they were up against? - mail any insights into this to vickyanddano@yahoo.com

NAME --------------------- Kaz Ota

DATE ---------------------- 7/3/01

TIMES --------------------- 7:00am to 5:00pm

CONDITIONS ------------- mostly sunny, foggy and calm in morning then breezy

AREA FISHED ------------- deeper weed edges

FISHING METHOD ------- topwaters,chasing schools of bass near deep weeds

BAIT/LURES USED ------- zara-spook,split-shot rigs,spinnerbaits

NOTES --------------------- what an experience for me on this day! Saw massive schools of alewifes near surface and larger fish(looked like schools of smallmouths)busting on them shads. Caught my biggest ever smallmouth(49.5cm,approx20") on Zara Spook(baby bass color),then immediately 4 more 12" to 15" smallmouth and largemouth on split shot rigs. Deptfinder showed baitfish all over,in depth from 10.2 to 11.5feet. These bass seemed to be bunched up under the schools of baitfish.Saw couple of smallmouth chasing the bass I was fighting! Marker buoys definitely helps.I triangulated the spot, but I doubt I can get back on those schools again. Just too perfect of a condition. What a fun day!

NAME --------------------- Joe C

DATE ---------------------- 7/2/01

TIMES --------------------- 5:15AM-7:45AM

CONDITIONS ------------- Windy, Cool

AREA FISHED ------------- Sharps Rock

FISHING METHOD ------- Slip bobbers, live lines

BAIT/LURES USED ------- Herring

NOTES --------------------- Took my nephew Nick Pastore out on his 11th birthday for a little striper fishing. We just got the lines in the water and I warned Nick that we don't always catch them. Just then one of the rods starting ripping out line. After 15 minutes Nick landed his first striper, 8lb 2oz 25 1/2 inch. Unfortunately, Nick isn't a KDC member or he would have tied the club record. Caught a catfish or two and headed in because the wind started to pick up.

NAME --------------------- Jim deLyon

DATE ---------------------- 7/1/01

TIMES --------------------- Morning

CONDITIONS ------------- Hot, hazy and humid.

AREA FISHED ------------- Great Cove off of dock.

FISHING METHOD ------- Casting w/ light spinning tackle.

BAIT/LURES USED ------- Small spinnerbait: blue/silver skirt w/ silver willow blade.

NOTES --------------------- Caught one largemouth, two rock bass, and one nice sized yellow perch. Went inside once the sun, humidity and boat wakes kicked in. Personally, I can't stand the amount of traffic that infiltrates this lake every summer weekend. Some of the boats are better suited for Barnegat Bay! This is a 2700 acre impoundment in NJ, not a 20000+ acre lake in the South. Oh well. Tight Lines and Good Luck.
